Menowell

The ‘MenoWell’ programme was established with dual aims: (1) fostering an inclusive online environment for women in various menopausal stages to engage in a 6-week evidence-based health and exercise initiative, and (2) equipping women with practical knowledge and resources to embrace healthy lifestyle behaviors during the aging process.

Developed and managed by Laois Sports Partnership in partnership with Edufit , ‘MenoWell’ combines live online health education masterclasses, menopause-specific exercise classes, and an extensive online library of resources.

Key Outcomes:

1. Improved Health and Wellbeing

The pilot of ‘MenoWell’ demonstrated significant enhancements in physical performance, menopausal symptoms management, overall wellbeing, and physical self-efficacy among perimenopausal and post-menopausal women in Laois.

2. Scientific Validation

A quantitative research study conducted by EduFIT, funded by Sport Ireland, showcased notable improvements in aerobic fitness, strength, flexibility, self-efficacy, and symptom reduction after just six weeks of ‘MenoWell’ training. The full research paper is available for reference.

3. Programme Reach

To date, 384 women in Laois and a total of 1,938 women across Ireland have completed the ‘MenoWell’ programme, highlighting its widespread impact.

Next Steps:

  1. National Expansion

The success of ‘MenoWell’ has spurred interest across Ireland, with several regions already adopting the programme. Plans for further expansion include continued delivery in existing areas and introduction to new counties.

  2. Train the Trainer Course

In 2025, EduFIT plans to launch a ‘MenoWell’ Train the Trainer course aimed at fitness instructors. This initiative aims to equip trainers with the necessary expertise to independently deliver the programme in their respective regions, enhancing scalability and sustainability.

  3. Building on Success

Drawing from the success of our Prime Time of Life programme, partners Edufit seeks to replicate and enhance their approach to cater to the needs of menopausal women nationwide.

Key Learnings:

The success of ‘MenoWell’ underscores the importance of evidence-based, accessible, and flexible programmes tailored to the needs of menopausal women. The provision of live and on-demand resources, coupled with expert support, is crucial for participant engagement and program effectiveness.

Participant Feedback

  • I just wanted to take a few minutes while I wait for the meeting this evening to say thank you. I know we are only in week 4 but the changes I have seen and made for myself since starting this has been huge for me, not knowing much or been given much information since I was told by my GP that I had started pre menopause.

The changes that I have experience with my body and not knowing if it was associated with pre menopause bar I looked in up on the internet. I have learned so much and even from tips from other participants on the programme, it has been a huge benefit to me. Also since doing the flex and stretch classes and getting myself motivated again to go back to my workouts I am now up at 6am every morning getting them done. I feel great after getting my stretches done and ready for the day ahead.

Once again, I would like to thank you all very much.

  • I would like to take this opportunity to share my appreciation for the EduFIT team for the fantastic Menowell Programme that I am taking part in. This fantastic programme should be available to all perimenopausal and menopausal women.

As the EduFIT team have shown weight bearing exercise can slow bone loss lowering the risk of fractures and osteoporosis. Flexibility training promoted better muscle function giving greater range of motion. All this has huge benefits not only for us women but vitally on our Health Services reducing the need for intervention as we age.

This programme promotes such positivity around a time in a woman’s life that up to now has been completely overlooked.

I can attest to the huge benefits of this programme and hope to partake in more in the future. The ladies involved are so committed, I hope more funding for programmes like these is available in the future.
